2019 Wk 13 - weekend with Jackie

Thank you Jackie for a great weekend - two full days of sewing and a day with the family

We made these pods (from here)

And sorted these old EPP Australian Starred hexies that stagnated about 5 years ago

And made these great Hello Pouches (can you see that the top half is vinyl?)

And had a great morning at Stitch - 22 of us altogether including three generations from one family

And we made these Charm tote bags (thank you Amo for the charm squares, they went perfectly with this petrol teale)

And these travel purses with credit card slots, a zip pocket, two slip pockets and a velcroed vinyl pocket

We also made a bag for Lisa's necessary essentials

And admired her ferris wheel crochet

We both got rather spoiled by the girls for Mothering Sunday

And they made me a momento frame with tickets and photos from our trip to NY earlier this year

These were from a class I taught last week.  Pincushions with a scissor pocket.

2018 Wk 22 Old Men and New Babies

I'm taking part in the Untangled Thread art project commemorating the end of WW1.  The pin cushions are based on an original design which was used at occupational therapy for wounded solders and they made something they could send to their mum or their sweetheart. 

We don't know much about Brian's granddad, but we know a Henry Channer was enlisted in 1916, and we know Granddad was known as Harry.  He married Rose in 1923, so it may have been him, so I (with help from Lisa and Niki) stuck a couple of hundred pins through the same number of beads to make this

We have had a spate of babies amongst neighbours and friends: A neighbour who used to babysit our girls when they were little has moved back in a few doors away from her mum and dad, and had baby William

Another neighbour has become a Grandmother to baby Amelia Rose.  I just need to finish the binding on these and I can deliver them

And Jackie has become a Granny again with baby Leah (but her quilt is being delivered in ten days so I'm not showing it here yet!)

My old boss and friend Dalwyn starts his new career as a Methodist minister in the autumn and I was delighted to be asked to make a stole for him.  Just in the draft stage at the moment but the stained glass rainbows have been posted to him to look at - does he want near solid or solid colours

And does he prefer hand stitched binding or twin needle stitched on the sewing machine?

My step mum sent me a memory box from my father's belongings:

I remember the hat - or one like it - he always wore one when he was sailing

Brian was really happy with the plane (bottom right)

A whole set of nautical flags will look great as bunting in the garden - really cheerful!

And my favourite of all - lots of photos of the girls that I have sent him over the years - all had been propped up on book shelves or stuck on walls!

The one which doesn't look much

I've spent a few days at my new job, learning from the girl who does it at the moment - I have a lot of things to learn, but I'm looking forward to starting on 5th September!

I managed to spend a few hours in the sewing room today, but apart from some boring school uniform embroidery I cant show you very much.

I made some hearts (which are more exciting than they look)

and some boring school uniform jumpers

Sorry!  Day at home tomorrow, so if I don't melt I should be able to produce something

The one where I got some more selvedge strips

I had a lovely afternoon at Plum's today

She gave me some more selvedge strips (in a little pouch and with a book of selvedge suggestions and even a surplus-to-requirements 9.5 inch square- I love that lady!!!)

 

I also got to see THIS (her 365 quilt) in real life

I cannot begin to tell you how gorgeous it is - so bright , and so many tiny pieces!

We did some sewing too - using the scraps left from many of the blocks: I made the three pin cushions

Add that to being fed, and coming home with a pile of no-longer-required quilting magazines I think we can all agree it was a day well spent!

I had a fab afternoon at Chertsey Museum this afternoon - show send tell from last month was the best ever . . .

Today is my last (:-(((( day at Jackie's. We've had a great few days, with loads and loads of making. We've been following instructions with varying degrees of success (who to blame for errors? Us or the instruction writers? We know who *we* choose!!!)

I'll add proper credits and links when I get home (so much easier at the PC than on an iPad!) but here's a brief photo gallery of the first makes activities . . .

But decided life was too short to make bias binding, so these will be finished after a little shopping spree

Rolling in Red

I seem to be on a bit of a red kick at the moment:

I've pieced and quilted Lisa's mostly red Christmas quilt

Some of the sashing is plain red, and some is printed with gold or silver Christmassy symbols.  The sashing placement is deliberate, and even required some un-sewing.  Can you see why I chose that placement? (see below for the answer)
    
And I made myself two red handy items in felt:  A wrist pin cushion and a needle case

 

And I've almost finished Niki's mostly red birthday quilt

 

  

No doubt which birthday she's getting it for (I cant believe I'm old enough to have a youngest child turning 21!!!)

(the number twenty one wasn't on the fabric so I've joined twenty and one together!)

And the printed sashing amongst the plain?  If you look for it, it spells Lisa's name :-)
