2017 Wk 7 - Mostly Selvedges

I have been collecting selvedge edges for a very long time (the first post about them was August 2011, and I already had a good collection.

I have been working on a kind of giant rectangular log cabin but whilst I had enough selvedges (thanks to all the kind donors, Plum especially) but I had run out of the 'lotus' fabric used with them.

I finally found the website, (not live but at least an email address) and then had to wait patiently for ages until it was back in stock . . .  but at last I have been able to finish the top for the Lotus Selvedge

Meanwhile the embroidery machine has been earning its keep stitching logos onto school uniform (43 so far this week) 

There is plenty more of the lotus fabric, and it looks perfect with these charm squares from Amo

I think I have a cunning plan

Woven Windup

A few days ago I assembled the woven blocks quilt, and (since this photo) got the binding machined on, so it just needs the second side hand stitching down.  I used a new fleece from Ikea, a lovely marl grey

 I'm really pleased with the effect of it, although some seams didn't match too well

I actually had enough fabric that it could have been a bit bigger, but I'd run out of fleece so it stopped at Ikea's standard size: 51x67", but that left me with fabric, and I'm trying to finish project fabrics.

Having enjoyed making the white Sweet Sixteen blocks I decided to start one with the leftover Woven strips

I joined together quite a few strips, pressed them, and cross cut them

I'll need to arrange them a bit more randomly, as my *actually* random attempt has too many fabrics near their twin.

I shall have to used Avril's planned random method - she calls it Randoku - random, but not repeating in a block, column or row!

Saturday Shopping (Binding Bought)

There is a possibility that I have plenty of fabric, there are people in this house that suggest I even have too much . . . But I did need some binding fabric for some of the quilts done over the Christmas hols, so Jackie and I felt we had a legitimate excuse to go fabric shopping!

Heck of a Hexie

I started an oversize hexi in June 2012 after being first inspired by Janine, and then being lent her books.

I never really thought about how big it should get, but it was getting quite hard to add each new layer so it has sat, abandoned, in a drawer for the last 18 months. Jackie gave me a good talking to: just finish it!

So I have quilted it

And machined on a bright rainbow striped binding

And it's now another one in the to-be-finished-in-the-cooler-weather pile

Making for M

You may recall that a while ago I made a quilt for a little boy, D, to take to his chemo appointments.  His class mates and his teachers all signed a block each and I assembled it:

Astonishingly, a neighbour of his, of a similar age: M, is about to undergo chemo too.  Her chemo is coming up much quicker than his did, so I didn't have time to get blocks signed before I could put them together . . . but I did have a very girly quilt close to being finished that I thought would be perfect for little miss M, and it could be signed after it had been constructed

So I dug out the Sorbet Squares top, and quilted it, with chevrons, organically following the colours

 

and I put a few daisies onto it,

and it's now gone to be signed by all her friends, and I've just got to stitch the binding to the back, and then it can go, with our love, to hospital with her

Chemo Quilt

We have a lovely pupil at my school who has had a brain tumour.  Luckily it is not cancerous, and much of it has been removed, but next week he start chemo to shrink the remaining growth.

 Over the last few weeks, the children in his class, and all the adults in the school decorated a square of yellow fabric, and today I had a lovely morning creating this

 

90 minutes start to finish, then ten minutes to sew the binding on and now I just need to hand stitch the binding down
